Site review at Photocritic

Fotoviva had a great review from the respected photoblog Photocritic this week. The owner of the site, Haje jan Kamps runs the interesting blog which has tons of useful photography related articles and is well known in the photoblog community. He is quite a character and has a particular writing style which makes reading the articles a joy!

After a brief chat he decided to write the article for us and also make a short interview with me which gives an insight into the fotoviva world. We would like to thank Haje for taking the time for the interview and wish him every success in the future.

Photo award at EarthShots!

Bird picture

Well I’m happy as Larry today (who is he anyway?) as one of my own images was made Photo of the Day over at Earthshots. The Rising Swan picture has proved to be a popular image on Fotoviva and we’d like to say a big thanks to those nice people at Earthshots!

Digg around at PhotographyVoter

There is a new site in the photography world that’s well worth a look. PhotographyVoter.com is a collobarative project that lets you share and vote for information, articles and photography resources with the photographyVoter community. This fills a void left by the mighty Digg world because they don’t have a dedicated photography section.

If you have any photography related articles that you have written yourself, you can submit them for free on the site. And if you just fancy a read there is a growing collection of interesting writing by photographers from all over the world. The site is seeing rapid growth as the word spreads and we can only see this as a good thing!

New monochrome photographer

Rajistan photograph

We are pleased to announce the arrival of Peter Campion to Fotoviva. He belongs to Cheltenham Camera Club & Cotswold Monochrome and regularily exhibits in national exhibitions. Originally shooting film, he now uses a Canon 400D with a Sigma 18-55 f2.8, Canon 28-135 & his trusty Canon 70-210 L f2.8 (when he feels strong enough to carry it!).

Most of his pictures are monochrome & he specialises in taking pictures of people - preferably in their natural surroundings but will photograph anything that catches his eye.

We have just uploaded two of his photographs which are stunning black and white prints taken from a trip to India in 2001. He has managed to capture real human emotion through his lens which is a very difficult skill. You can see his work in our new Portrait Photography section.

We look forward to adding some more excellent images from Peter soon, as he has just come back from Bhutan!

Quick tip for beginner photographers

UV Filters

Many photographers always use a UV Filter on their cameras, wherever they go. The reason being that not only do they absorb ultraviolet rays from the sun, give cleaner, sharper pictures with less haze, but it also protects the lens from dust, moisture, scratches, and breakage.

UV filters can be bought from shops such as Jessops for as little as £12.99. Well worth the cost considering without one to protect your lens you could end up paying hundreds of pounds for a brand new lens if you scratch it!

New landscape and fine art pictures

We are pleased to announce 2 new art prints by our acclaimed photographer Don Tiffney. ‘Barnard Castle’ is a wonderful landscape picture and ‘Cascade’ shows a strong technical understanding when utilising shutter speed and filters to create the magical water blur effect.

Both these art prints can be purchased from the Fotoviva Online Art Store in a variety of sizes as either giclee canvas prints or poster art.
